Running the Length of the Royal Canal

My Royal Canal Run – 21st June 2019

After 35 weeks of planning and training the time had come to take on my personal challenge of running the entire distance of the Royal Canal from the Sea Lock at the River Liffey in Dublin to the 46th Lock at Richmond Harbour in Cloondara in Co. Longford. A distance of just over 90 miles.

Over the previous several months I had carried out many recce runs along the banks, covering all the parts of the canal in sections so I knew the lay of the land and good places where it would be possible for my support crew to meet me.

I’m a proud member of Dublin Bay Running Club and having be running since 2011.

I ran my first marathon in Dublin in 2012 and since then I’ve clocked up 100 marathons including completing the 50k Irish National Championships 5 times, completing 5 marathons in 5 days at the EOI running festival in 2015, 100k Thames Path Challenge in 2017, London 2 Brighton 100k in 2018 and Donadea 100k in 2019.

I frequently train on the banks of the Royal Canal and in June 2019 I completed a full distance run of the Royal Canal (146km) in 20hours, 47minutes and 46 seconds.
